Just wondering how long to spend in Kandy? We plan to see the temple, lake and botanic gardens - how long will we need for this - and what else is recommended?
Are there interesting shops for browsing if we find ourselves with time on our hands? You can see the Tooth Temple, the lake and botanical gardens in one day if needed, but Kandy is an interesting city so If you have enough time, you should spend at least a couple of days there.
I would also recommended watching the Cultural Show and the Elephant Orphanage on the way to Colombo. Shopping in the local market mainly clothes is interesting, but you will need your bargaining skills.
You will certainly need one full day in Kandy and so if you are travelling from some distance an overnight stop is advisable. In addition to the places mentioned by Hans, you could also visit the Tea Museum, which is about 15 minutes from the centre of town and also the Udawattakele reserve, a forested area right in the heart of Kandy. Around Kandy there are also many temples, the most famous being Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka and Embekke.
There are lots of shops and an old style market, as well as a modern mall, all within easy walking distance of each other, lots of restaurants and a wide range of choice for accommodation.
