The Lonely Planet suggests a day trip biking and ferry-hopping from Jaffna through the islands. I have a few questions about this, as they don't provide details. We're coming from the Netherlands and are accustomed to nice bike paths that are usually separate from the roadway.
If one simply bikes on the road there and there's a steady stream of cars , that wouldn't appeal to us, particularly with some of our children biking themselves. But indeed forget bike paths, those exist maybe for a few km! Usual advice to bikers esp. Bike seats and trailers never saw them at all anywhre here.
Delft Island is a great trip but not on bikes no space for them on the packed ferry , just use tuktuk once on the Island.
This is the passage from the LP elsewhere they say something about doing this on bikes:. One option is to head from Jaffna city to Velanai and then to the island of Punkudutivu, ferry-hopping from here across to the temples of Nainativu and then returning by Kayts and Karaitivu island to the mainland. The second option is an excursion to remote, idyllic Neduntivu Delft.
Any feedback on these two options? There are also direct buses from Jaffna to the jetty. We were back 3 PM giving us enough time to take the much more frequent and short ferry hop paid to Nainativu Nagadeepa , stay there an hour, and back. Beware the situation at Nainativu: And if needed for tired kiddie legs or parents stroller-pushing energies there are tuktuks and even a bus available.
