A raterio named aaron befriended us, and tagged along with us to a few spots. At one point i got seperated from my friends, and we went to papas and beer. I went to the bathroom and next thing i know i got a security guard leading me back to the deck saying he saw me do drugs which i dont, and the raterio is translating into english. There is a reason you dont see any americans out at night here. We saw some other kids who said they were from oregon, and i later found out that they were robbed also but it had noting to do with the raterio, i presume it was the same security people at papas and beer that got them also.
Im in Ensenada now myself. I know its not very safe either. I was in Rosarito for 3 days, the locals told me the police in Rosarito and TJ are one of the worst in Baja California.
Ive heard so many horror stories about the crooked cops but never a popular spot like Pappa N Beer. I was suppose to head there tonight.. I am sorry to hear that happened to you I will keep my eye out tonight, thanks for the advice. I really want to go to Tijuana for one night, but there are so many bad stories coming from there.
I hope people are reading this post. The same kinds of ruses and robberies are happening in Tijuana and other places in Upper Baja according to posts in this travel site and others. Not just in bars, but on the streets as well. I have been to Ensenada and the rest of upper Baja several times and always felt safe there in the past. It's really unfortunate that it has become this bad. I also have to caution that police in these cities are also often corrupt, and there are stories posted here and other places about police being involved in the same kinds of scams.
Maybe we gringos should just not go there until Mexico figures out how to clean it up. Sorry you had to experience the Raterio scam. Since this type of information tends to get lost in forums, it was also mentioned in the Inside Ensenada Health and Safety page back in April in the hope that more people would see it.
