February 9, She was living in poverty, selling her body to drug dealers to feed a powerful addiction to crack cocaine. Her near future looked destined for death, even though she had four young children who desperately needed their mother.
I just became a person I never would have been before. Her mother was a sex trade worker who lived with various tricks. Sometimes those tricks molested Spurvey and her siblings, so she went to live with a foster family in B. Spurvey came back to Edmonton a few years later and her future looked bright. She had good grades and excelled in sports, but her mother pulled her out of school to work and help pay rent.
At age 17, she had her first child. Spurvey had three more children in a relationship she describes as abusive. Yet she maintained a job at the Royal Bank and was getting ready to go to school to become a social worker. She finally left her relationship and moved to an apartment with her three children and a newborn baby boy.
Within a year, the student loan was gone, credit cards were maxed out, things were being pawned, and she was selling her body to drug dealers to get high. Spurvey eventually sought treatment at a centre on the Alexander First Nation. In order to escape the nightmare, she moved to Camrose where she remained clean and sober for the first year.
Instead of selling herself to drug dealers, Spurvey began dealing crystal meth. It all came to an end when police raided her home. I just could not seem to get control of anything.
